Swapping the Box for the Market, America’s New Food Culture

After the turn of the 21st century, America’s interest in food has gone from TV dinners to celebrity TV chefs. This complete transformation in food culture has people spending more time at home learning the art of cooking, and with healthier ingredients. Instead of packaged goods out of the pantry, Americans are opting for raw ingredients out of the refrigerator.

With the resurgence of home cooking, people are stocking their kitchens with cookbooks and signing up for online culinary schools. And it was all started by some very big — in one instance, literally — reasons.

When the financial crisis hit in 2008, many foodies found themselves not tightening their belts, but tightening their wallets. This meant eating out less and eating at home more. At the same time, the popularity of culinary television programs in direct.tv shows, from Iron Chef to No Reservations, continued to thrive. Mix the two together and you have a surplus of aspiring amateur chefs across the country.

Meanwhile, the beginning of the 21st century saw numerous reports released that detailed what a food culture based on fast food and easy-to-prepare meals had done to the average American’s body. They showed that obesity rates had skyrocketed across the country, with over a third of the population categorized as obese. This alarming figure caused people to rethink their diets, avoiding processed foods like bullion cubes and powdered cheese that are extremely high in additives like sodium or fat.

Reports on food production also yielded some startling statistics related to contributions to pollution. From shipping emissions to agricultural run off, big farming was malignantly affecting the environment. Thus, consumers began to value organic foods, grown locally and under more natural processes. The additional health benefits also played a part.

From online culinary schools to shopping at farmer’s markets, modern day food culture in America has come a long way and continues to change for the better.

Eating Healthier by Using Organic Foods

Nearly all of us want to eat a more nutritional diet, yet some may find it hard due to a lack of time or incentive. One way to better your diet is to use, when possible, organic foods. Organic foods that are properly registered as so, at least provide the consumer the assurance that the food products have not been doused in chemical pesticides. They can also help cut down on food born illnesses due to the fact that they way the food is grown is monitored more closely. Many cases of E.Coli are started when consumer’s choose vegetables at the store that have been grown in foreign countries that do not have strict regulations as far as safety is concerned.

Organic fruits and vegetables may be slightly higher in price then others, but the benefits usually outweigh the few pennies extra that are spent to be assured that you are not feeding yourself or your family members pesticides. In a recent scientific study, apples were said to contain vast amounts of pesticides, even after washing them thoroughly. Many fruits that have soft outer skins are also usually contaminated. Fruits such as strawberries and peaches are very on the list of fruits that contain large amounts of chemicals, even after being peeled. To save money when buying organic fruits and vegetables, try shopping at places such as the local farmer’s market instead of health food stores or regular grocery stores.

Hidden and/or Unknown Ingredients in the Foods We Eat

It has been stated that if we were to see the way many of the food products we eat were processed, we would probably never eat those items again. As consumers, we trust that the foods we spend our hard earned money on are made from quality ingredients. That’s not always the case. Many ingredients that we eat on a daily basis have names most of us can’t even pronounce, nor do we know exactly what they are. Knowing the names of some of these odd food ingredients will at least give you an idea as to what to look for the next time you shop. Then you will be free to decide whether or not you still wish to purchase the item.

For those that enjoy the taste of raspberries, beware that some raspberry flavored candies may contain an ingredient called castoreum. Although castoreum can be man-made, in its natural form it originally comes from the anal glands of a beaver. Not many consumers would purposely seek out a candy that contains this ingredient.

Another item you may not know you are consuming is one that is commonly used to color red food items, such as yogurts and other desserts. The name of this food product is called carmine. It is made from crushed and dried beetles.  Because it is a bug, it can be listed as a natural food ingredient.

Being decisive towards the nature of food we consume!!

The conflict of vegetarians and non vegetarians is something very similar to what goes on with the duo of girls’ v/s boys. In the preset day world, the rate of slaughtering of animals, birds have been increasing to a great extent to meet the demands of the non- vegetarian food diets. With this scenario, a major proportion of population questions about the survival without animal derived food products (especially the ones involving slaughtering). Can’t the advantages of the non veggie food be compensated by any of the veggie stuff? Or is it just the taste buds in front of which such a mayhem on living beings is also neutralized. A report from WHO has shown that there are more than 160 types of diseases which are transmitted by consumption of the non veggie materials. As the people have become more modern, they have started eating anything and everything. But this should not be so. People should understand that the food they are consuming is making several living beings inexistent which also possess the same right of survival just like they do. Every individual have their own perception of eating non-veg. It is no less than a sin, slaughtering an animal and above that torturing it before making it edible for consumption by Homo sapiens!

There are plenty advantages of vegetarian foods above non- vegetarians. Veggie food stuffs being more fibre rich, having high water content, being less expensive and helpful in fulfilling body’s requirements to aid in curbing and curing a huge range of health issues. Whereas, non – veggie diets has been researched as health problem inducing and causing weaknesses in various parts of the body. The biggest advantages of non veggie stuff are their rich protein content and the availability of Vitamin B12 which are sufficiently available in products like soybeans and milk respectively.

Food, the fuel to life

The body is build up by regular supply of nutrients, minerals, vitamins, macros including proteins, carbohydrates and fats. The richest and canonical source to fulfill the body’s requirements to carry out the workings from micro to macro level is the food we eat! All the living entities need a source for energy either in one form or the other. The minimal needs for the body are fulfilled by the types of food materials taken in. Thus, it is a call of our “precious treasure” to be really careful in what we choose to eat and drink. Most of the times, an imbalance and ignorance of the food we eat lead to abnormalities of various kinds like obesity, hypertension, lifestyle disorders and more. Sometimes food is unknowingly thought of just as a source to satiate the appetite and hunger but the relevance of balance diet has been diminishing with ever increasing junkies and “bad” foods.

The foods can be of a plant or an animal origin. Can be consumed raw (in case of fruits, certain vegetables) or can be cooked by plenty of ways to render them relishing and savory before consumption (certainly all the animal products, vegetables and other plant derived food products). The consumption should be nutritious and must be well analyzed to compensate the specific nutrition demands of your torso. Humans have created a pool of health troubles by improper choices and being excess on one & deficient on the other aspect of the diet.

What you intake is your food which directly affects your growth, development and body’s strength & weaknesses physically. The “fuel” when fed needs to be regulated in terms of quantity too. Eating too much is no help or would do no good in saving you from four days eating task for that sake. Being able to have what you savory will be possible when you watch out your food and feed well!

Studying Culinary Arts

Have you ever seen the Food Network show “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives”? Or maybe you have tuned into “Iron Chef,” which pits celebrity chefs such as Bobby Flay against some of the top culinary artists from around the world. Food has arrived. It is not just to keep people healthy and active anymore. It is the way that modern artists express their passions. For aspiring chefs, it is a way to pursue their passions. Studies are no longer restricted to avenues such as mathematics, languages, or physical sciences. Students interested in studying culinary arts now have that option.

Success depends on more than studying a major that is in demand. If a student graduates with a hot degree, but he or she does not have the passion to continue on the same path, then what was the point? Cooking might not be for everyone, but for students with a desire to experiment with new flavors and food offerings, culinary studies might provide them with the option to enter into a career with both financial and personal rewards.

The American economy does not even resemble what it looked like a decade ago. Americans have to diversify their knowledge to enter into a rewarding career path. Even tough it might not immediately seem like it, inventing new and interesting ways to dine will always be a lucrative career path. People will always need to eat, and dining at a trendy restaurant will always be a status symbol of a thriving economy.

One of the best ways to study culinary arts is to pursue online degrees. By studying online, students reduce their costs by eliminating the need to travel to a new location. Attending school at a set location is not a requirement for online degrees. The internet is changing the way that people pursue their education.

!!Veganism!!

A person’s individual eating habits has been categorized broadly into vegetarianism and non- vegetarianism. Amongst vegetarians there is a class of people specified as “vegans”. Vegetarians in a broad sense exclude the animal derived products for feeding purposes. Vegans differ from vegetarians in the manner that vegetarians are the diet vegans whereas the “vegans” are the ones who reject the use of animals and their derived products or uses in any means ostracizing fur, wool, silk, leather, gelatin, honey and many more. Vegans exclude the dairy and poultry products too. The concept is linked to the Jain and Buddhist theories of non – violence towards living beings. Donald Watson was the founder of the term “vegan” and the creator of the vegan society.

Vegans food diet includes grains, cereals, fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts i.e. all the plant family derived products. There have been alternatives for the dairy and similar products which are available in the market under the category of vegan products such as vegan cheese, ice creams, vegan milk, tofu, burgers, sausages and vegan mayonnaise. Exclusion of the non-vegan dietary components generally leaves a perception of vegans thriving on just leaves (salads!) and fruits. But this is not the real view. There are number of options for vegans too including vegetable curries, pastas, fries splendidly made worldwide using varieties of vegetables prepared using spices, condiments and vegan flavors. In all if you have plans for being a vegan, do not hesitate, just move in gradually rather than opting for a sudden transverse which might not last long enough.
